The undergraduate program in School Health education offers a k-12 license and is approved by the Ohio State Department of Education. Results of the programmatic evaluation, in which the program was evaluated as an "excellent undergraduate program that could be a model for others" by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, are available through the HEDP Program office in 316 White Hall.

The mission, intent and purpose of the B.S.E. degree program in Health Education at Kent State University is to prepare students for employment as teachers in public and private schools. Students are required to pass a series of Praxis tests in order to graduate and to receive licensure.

Broad objectives of the program include the following:

Students will gain curricular experience and demonstrated knowledge in:

  1. liberal education;
  2. social and cultural diversity;
  3. human growth and development;
  4. health content;
  5. pre-professional and professional coursework, and
  6. professional identity;

Students will obtain supervised teaching experience in Student Teaching;

Students will gain curricular experiences and demonstrate knowledge and skills in the foundations of school health. For example:

  • in the contextual dimensions of the school itself and of the school within the broader community;
  • the relationship between health and academic outcomes;
  • the value of coordinated school health programs;
  • administration of school health programs;
  • the social-ecological framework within which health issues can be best addressed;
  • history and philosophy of school health;
  • role, function, and professional identity of school health teachers;
  • strategies of leadership designated to enhance the learning environment of schools based on better health individually and environmentally;
  • current issues, policies, laws, and legislation relevant to school health;
  • knowledge and application of current and emerging technology; and
  • ethical and legal considerations in school health.

Students will gain curricular experiences in the contextual dimensions of school health that provide an understanding of the coordination of health program components as they relate to the school community.
