C&I 61126/71126 Research in Social Studies Teaching and Learning
During this course students will explore and discuss relevant research into the teaching and learning of social studies. Additionally, teachers will have an opportunity to begin to examine an aspect or aspects of their own social studies teaching or their students' learning of social studies. This will be a great opportunity to read and discuss social studies research with other social studies educators across grade levels. Offered Fall 2007. C&I 67095/77095 Democratic and Historical Thinking in the Teaching and Learning of K-12 Social Studies
(this course will appear in the course catalog as ST: Democ. & Hist. Think. in K-12) We will explore the role of inquiry and investigation as a means of developing historical and democratic thinking in social studies/history education. Students will have opportunities to review the literature addressing the relationship between historical and democratic thinking in K-12 curriculum, assess state and national curriculum standards for evidence and opportunities for historical and democratic thinking, analyze research aimed at understanding how teachers and students best learn to investigate history and engage in experiential learning of inquiry-based practice in history. In the end, each student will develop an investigative unit aimed at promoting democratic and historical thinking for a grade-level of his/her choice. Offered Spring 2008.
