Applying to Our Program
Request an evaluation of your content area coursework. If your undergraduate degree is in a teaching subject area, i.e., art, chemistry, English, foreign languages, mathematics, music, physics, social studies, or home economics contact the appropriate faculty member listed on the faculty page for the evaluation.
If your undergraduate degree is in psychology, sociology, business administration, general studies, etc., please contact the Office Student Services at (330) 672-2862 to schedule an appointment with a program counselor or mail transcripts with the request for evaluation form (transcript eval form) To the Office of Student Services, 304 White Hall, Kent State University, Kent, OH 44242-0001 for the content evaluation.
The evaluation must be completed and submitted to the Graduate School of Education by February 15th.
Application cut-off is February 15th
There are several steps that must be completed to be considered for the Secondary MAT Program at Kent State University. All the following materials must be completed and submitted before the cut-off date of February 15th: applications, transcripts, test scores, supplemental form, essay, content evaluation, and letters of recommendation. It is highly recommended to have all materials submitted 6-8 weeks prior to the cut-off date.
- Complete two copies of the application form
- Complete the supplemental form , including a 1000 word essay**
- **Please type and double space your response. In addition, use a standard size and font (12 point, Times, or New York).
- Try to inform the reader the following about yourself and your potential as a future teacher:
- What qualities and experiences do you have that you believe will help to make you an effective teacher?
- What experiences do you have as a "teacher"? Include any volunteer experiences where you worked with children (and note specifically when the children were between 12 and 18) in an organized situation. Describe the situation(s) and your involvement?
- Include a brief statement to conclude your essay which communicates your desire to become a teacher.
- Complete the verification of moral character statement
- Send both copies of the application, supporting materials, and a $30.00 application fee to: Graduate School of Education; 418 White Hall, Kent State University, P.O. Box 5190, Kent, OH 44242-0001. The check or money order for the non-refundable application fee must be payable to Kent State University. The fee is required of all applicants, including those who have received a degree from Kent State University.
- Request that 2 letters of recommendation be prepared on the forms provided and sent to the Graduate School of Education. If at all possible, one of the letters should be completed by a faculty member familiar with your academic work, and the other should be supplied by individuals familiar with your professional achievements. Sets of credentials and letters of recommendation from credentials files will be accepted in lieu of one letter of recommendation.
- Have two official transcripts from each college or university in which at least eight semester hours (12 quarter hours) were earned sent directly to the Office of Graduate Student Services, even though credits may have been transferred to another institution. Official transcripts issued directly to you are acceptable if they carry the university seal and are complete. The Office of Graduate Student Services will secure a transcript of those credits which were earned at Kent State University.
NOTE: We need official transcripts directly from your prior school, or hand-carried official transcripts that are sealed in an envelope. Even if you have transferred coursework, we still need the original transcripts from that university.

7. Submit test results from the General Knowledge portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). GRE scores take 6 weeks to reach the college. It is recommended that you take the walk-in exam by November. Deadline information can be found at http://www.gre.org. You can also take the exam electronically. Testing can be arranged at some local testing services. For example, in the Kent area, Prometric Testing Center (330/922-5587) offers year-round computer-based (CB) testing. You may also take the CB exam at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio (216) 368-1030. We will accept the electronic printout of scores given at the end of the test for the application packet until the official scores arrive. Note: This is general information, not a commercial advocating any particular testing center.
8. Submit a copy of your most current resume.
Completed applications will be forwarded to the department for review. Please be prepared to interview with the faculty member reviewing your application. The Office of Graduate Student Services will send official notification regarding the status of your application. Please contact the admissions secretary at (330) 672-0557 if you have any questions regarding the application process. The evaluation must be completed and submitted to the Graduate School of Education Health and Human Services (EHHS) before the cutoff date of February 15th.
