Theory and Practice in the Teaching of Reading

This course focuses on the nature and development of reading, approaches to reading instruction, and reading's relationship to learning and development.

In this course, learners will study:

  • Theories and models of reading
  • Instructional principles and practices
  • Curriculum planning and evaluation for literacy instruction
  • Emergent and early reading
  • The teaching of: word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension and study skills
  • Developing partnerships with families

Diagnosis and Remediation in Reading

This course focuses on the theory and application of diagnostic principles and remedial reading approaches with school-aged children. Included is an exploration of the cultural, linguistic, cognitive, and affective factors in diagnosing and addressing reading difficulties.

In this course, learners will study:

  • Diagnostic frameworks
  • Assessment principles
  • Preparation of case reports
  • Affect and reading
  • Informal reading inventories
  • A variety of reading assessments
  • Remediation in word recognition, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension
  • Developing remedial reading programs

Clinical Practicum in Corrective Reading

This course focuses on the application of learning from the previous two courses, including supervised diagnostic reading work with school-aged children and diagnostic/remedial report writing.

In this course, learners will:

  • Review existing data about students
  • Determine diagnostic questions
  • Plan, execute, and interpret a diagnosis to explore those questions
  • Establish instructional goals based on diagnostic results
  • Plan individual and small group lessons designed to facilitate student growth in goal areas
  • Engage in short-term and long-term evaluation of student growth
  • Prepare a final letter summarizing the school-aged pupil's practicum experience

Reading in the Content Areas

This course focuses on the necessary information and competencies for improving students' reading and studying in the content areas in the intermediate grades through post-secondary years.

In this course, learners will engage in four major areas of study: teaching and learning with texts, classroom contexts, instructional strategies, and professional development.

Course content will include:

  • Reading, writing and study skills in the content areas
  • Strategies and materials for: vocabulary development, comprehension, and content area concepts
  • Evaluation in content area instruction
  • Classroom management and instructional decisions

This course focuses on understanding linguistic features of print, issues related to language development, and effective teaching of phonics for skilled reading.
